Since there were no high school swim conferences or leagues in eastern Pennsylvania (outside of Philadelphia), in the mid 1960s a group of schools who were all swimming independent schedules met and organized the CENTRAL PENNSYLVANIA INTERSCHOLASTIC SWIMMING LEAGUE.  Charter members for the first year (1965-1966) were Bishop McDevitt, Coatesville, Hershey, Lancaster McCaskey, Manheim Township, Milton Hershey, Wilson, York Suburban, and York William Penn.  At that time there were no schools sponsoring girls swimming so it was an all male league.  The girl's league began in the 1974-1975 season.  As more schools built pools and added teams, conferences such as the YAIAA and MidPenn began to sponsor their own leagues and the CPL lost some members.  To take their place, schools in Berks County such as Boyertown, Governor Mifflin, Muhlenberg, Reading, Schuylkill Valley, and Wyomissing joined the league.  In addition, many schools from Lancaster and Lebanon such as Cedar Crest, Elizabethtown, Ephrata, Hempfield, Penn Manor, and Warwick joined the CPL.  In addition, Owen J. Roberts from District 1 joined the league.  During the 1980s and 1990s, the CPL grew to as many as 18 schools, and for many years had 2 divisions.  The boys and girls champions from each division competed at the end of the season to determine an overall CPL Champion.  At the end of the 1999 season, the LL was formed and those schools left the CPL.  The CPL added 3 more schools (Exeter, Twin Valley, and Daniel Boone), but with the withdrawal of Boyertown and Owen J. Roberts, the Central Penn League is now primarily a Berks County league with 8 schools.  Over the years, the CPL has produced many outstanding teams and individuals.  A large percentage of the PIAA District 3 team champions are from this league, and 9 PIAA team championships are from the CPL.  A multitude of CPL swimmers and divers have been district and state champions, earned All-American status, and have excelled at the collegiate and national levels.  Two have represented the USA at the Olympics.  The Central Penn League annually sponsors league championships for both swimmers and divers, an All-League team which honors the top-3 individuals and relays in every event, and a Most Outstanding female and male swimmer and diver award.
